Facts about Pongal – The Tamil Culture

India a land of festive country in which the first festival comes out is Pongal. Now we are going to see about the tamil culture how do they follow it. here we go


What is Pongal?

It is a Four day harvest festival which is celebrated in Tamilnadu a traditional occasion for giving thanks to nature which gives us grain. It comes in the month of thai which is January where rice, sugarcane, turmeric etc are harvested.

Types of days in Pongal?

There are 4 different types of day’s are celebrated in Pongal.

The First day is known as Bhogi Pongal in which they discard their old things like dresses and clean their house by painting and make rice kolam to give a festive look.

In the Second main day of the celebration Pongal is made by rice, jaggery etc. has been made in a pot covered by turmeric leaves along with sugarecane and is has been served among their surroundings & they worship their god.

The Third day is celebrated as Maatu Pongal. Farmers paint their cows horn and they worship the cow or bull decorate with the ornaments & Eru thazhuvudal which is aka Jallikattu has been played as a tradition.

The Fourth day which is known as Kaanum Pongal it marks the end of the pongal on this day the family relations come together & it is celebrated as Bhai Dhuj. And also in the remembrance of a Thiruvalluvar it is celebrated as Thiruvalluvar Day.

What is Jallikattu?

It is consider as symbolic of Tamilan pride. Jallikattu which is also known as
eru thazhuvudhal it is played with the bull.

These bulls are entered through vadi vasal entrance & only one person is allowed at a time to take off the bull hump. If the bull wins it has been taken for preserving the native breeds.

In 2016, People for Ethical Treatment for Animal (PETA) filed a case against Jallikattu for violating taming the bulls. Then the central government banned it. During a long protest at Marina beach many celebrities took part in that Jallikattu. After a long conversation And now it has being played successfully.
